Onsen | Hot springs

There are a lot of onsen in the local vicinity and so this is just a selection that we have been to and you may wish to check out. It’s common to take a towel with you (including a small towel for washing/ modesty), and your own toiletries although you can rent them and most onsen provide standard soap, shampoo etc.

Iconic Onsen

Gunma is often referred to as onsen heaven by the Japanese and some of the most iconic onsens in Japan are within a 30-60min radius from the Villa.

These iconic onsen are often within ryokan (guesthouses) but allow guests during the day to use their baths. Check with the onsen but typically last entry is around 2-3pm. As many Japanese would do, make a day of it and book for lunch - arrive early, bathe, eat lunch, rest, bathe again, sleep, return home utterly refreshed.

Hoshi onsen, a 140 year old national registered cultural treasure located around 25mins drive just beyond Sarugakyo. The main bathing hall is mixed, however a separate bath for women is available

Kaikake onsen, has a 700 year history as an onsen located deep in snow country around 55mins drive between Naeba and Yuzawa. A stunning location where you may just see snow monkeys while you bathe.

Takaragawa onsen, there is evidence of people using the hot springs in ancient times but the current facilities were constructed in 1955. Outdoor mixed bathing (you wear towels provided) alongside the river. Stunningly picturesque, Takaragawa is the often on the front cover of Japanese tourist publications and is a 40min drive beyond Minakami.

Shima onsen, is a small town of onsen one of which (Sekizenkan Ryokan) apparently provided the real life inspiration for Ghibli’s Spirited Away . Our pick is Tamura one of the oldest onsen (from the 1600s) and an interesting array of different baths

Kusatsu onsen, is one of the most famous onsen towns in Japan with a wide array of free public and private ryokan onsens. It is a little bit further at 1hr 10mins drive from the Villa

Local Onsen

Actually one of the great pleasures of Japan is experiencing onsen like the locals do. There are many local onsen in the area and many people, especially elderly visit daily.

A word of warning, the locals often like it hot. Real hot. Whilst you may struggle initially in waters that feel scalding, the feeling afterwards is on another level. And once you’ve enjoyed it, there’s no going back…

Mistumine no Yu, around 10mins drive from the Villa. Local, cheap and hot. Whilst the building is basic, the photo above is of the bath in Mitsumine

Ibuki no Yu, around 10mins drive towards Kusatsu in Takayama village is a proper village run onsen. This is another one where the locals like it hot, but on the plus side it’s super cheap and friendly

Sanazawa on Yu, is located in a guesthouse overlooking terraced paddy fields about 10-15min drive beyond jomo-kogen station. They have a nice cafe and the water is pleasantly hot, not scalding

Suzumori no Yu, around 20mins drive in Minakami is a popular day onsen for locals and visitors alike. They have a wonderful outdoor bath overlooking a waterfall, juxapositioned underneath the highway overbridge

Mantenboshi no Yu, is a popular large onsen with indoor and outdoor baths around 20mins drive in Sarugakyo. They have a nice canteen and chill out areas. Very convenient after a day’s skiing in Kagura
